According to, 42 people in the United States were killed in 2014 as a result of dog bites.  Despite being regulated in Military Housing areas and over 700 U.S. cities, pit bulls contributed to 64% (27) of these deaths. Pit bulls make up about 6% of the total U.S. dog population.  In 2014, loose dogs off their owner's property caused 40% of all fatal attacks, a sharp rise from the last 10-year rate of 24% (2005 to 2014).

You may have heard on the news about the tragic death of a 6 year-old boy who in July 2015 was mauled by a pit bull dog in Henderson County, North Carolina.   See the blog by clicking here.  The Asheville Humane Society adopted the neutered, year-old pit bull to the boy’s neighbor about 3 weeks before the attack.  Pit bulls are banned in Dillon and Travelers Rest South Carolina.  Ten people have been killed by pit bulls in South Carolina since 2004.  See the map which shows where the South Carolina deaths have happened.

Anyone can be bitten by another person’s pet dog at any time, children are especially prone to dog attacks.  Dog bites can be physically and emotionally devastating.  Dog bites to the face can result in loss of and damage to facial tissues, including skin, muscle, nerves and organs requiring painful medical treatment and plastic surgery.  A victim’s physical appearance can be permanently changed.  The emotional trauma resulting from a dog bite can result in a lifelong fear of dogs and animals.

If you or a loved one has been bitten by a dog while in a public place or legally in a private place in South Carolina, the owner of the dog is responsible for your injuries and damages.  It does not matter that the dog had not been vicious before the bite; if the owner of the dog knew or did not know the dog was vicious before the bite; or if the owner had been negligent in his care of the dog.  As is the case in any area of South Carolina law, there are exceptions to this general rule, which is why it is important to consult with K.C. as soon as possible after the bite.

If you or a loved one has been bitten by a dog or any other type of animal in South Carolina, call the Mangus Law Firm to schedule your free consultation today.
